Two new Star Trek movies confirmed, Jessica Jones helmer to direct Star Trek 4 with Chris Hemsworth returning

April 27, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Last month, Simon Pegg revealed that the script for a planned fourth instalment of the rebooted Star Trek franchise had been completed prior to Quentin Tarantino pitching his own take on the series, with Zachary Quinto then going one better and stating that there are actually three competing scripts for the next Trek movie.

Well, Paramount Pictures CEO Jim Gianopulos has revealed at CinemaCon that the studio and Skydance Productions are planning “several new Star Trek movies [and have] two in the works right now”.

Following on from that, Variety is reporting that Jessica Jones helmer S.J. Clarkson has signed on to direct the follow-up to Star Trek Beyond, the script Pegg referred to from J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. This makes Clarkson the first female filmmaker to helm a Star Trek movie.

That project was first announced back in 2016, and will see the return of Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk, the father of Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk. Zachary Quinto is also confirmed to return as Spock.

The press release from back in 2016 described the movie as: “In the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.”

Apparently, the plan is to move ahead with Star Trek 4 first, allowing time for the script to be completed on the Quentin Tarantino project.
