UK cinemas enjoy best year since 1970

January 27, 2019 by Gary Collinson

According to figures from the UK Cinema Association, British cinemas enjoyed a bumper year in 2018, with the likes of Avengers: Infinity War and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again helping to generate a whopping 177 million visits to the multiplexes – the most since 1971.

“Services like Netflix and Amazon and Apple’s iTunes have certainly been disrupters, especially Netflix, in home entertainment,” said Tim Richards, the chief executive of Vue International (via The Guardian). “But they haven’t impacted our business. I’ve lived through the arrival of the DVD, Blu-ray discs, the internet and every time doomsayers have predicted the ultimate demise of the industry. But every time we have seen cinema do the opposite and grow.”

Here’s the top ten movies at the UK box office for 2018:

1. Avengers: Infinity War – £66.7 million
2. Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! – £60.7 million
3. Incredibles 2 – £52.2 million
4. Black Panther – £47.8 million
5. Bohemian Rhapsody – £44.7 million
6. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – £38.7 million
7. Peter Rabbit – £38 million
8. The Greatest Showman – £37.8 million
9. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald – £31.3 million
10. Deadpool 2 – £30.6 million

Meanwhile, cinema admissions in the US was also up 7.4% year-on-year, with 1.3 billion tickets sold in 2018.
