Universal movies heading to Peacock four months after theatrical release

July 7, 2021 by EJ Moreno

The relationship between theaters and streaming services is evolving every day. The pandemic has shifted things, but the landscape was going to change no matter what.

The Hollywood Reporter is noting that Universal Pictures is the latest studio to lean into streaming more as THR reports that all movies from Universal will arrive on Peacock no later than four months after their theatrical releases in 2022.

2022 is shaping up to be quite the year for Universal, so Peacock subscribers will get to enjoy the likes of Jurassic World: Dominion, Halloween Ends and Minions: The Rise of Gru, along with a new film from Jordan Peele.

THR also notes that the studio is shaking up traditional licensing, stating that: “Universal is going further in deciding to carve up the 18th-month pay-one window to license across content across a variety of platforms. For the first and last four months, movies will play exclusively on Peacock; for the intervening 10 months, they will be made available to other partners that have yet to be disclosed.”

On top of all that, Universal will also develop and produce a selection of original films exclusively for Peacock.

“Universal Filmed Entertainment Group has been a fantastic partner, and we are excited to not only bring their amazing slate of blockbuster films and beloved franchises to Peacock in the first-pay window but also provide a steady stream of fresh, original films exclusively for Peacock customers throughout the year,” said Matt Strauss, Chairman, Direct-to-Consumer and International, NBCUniversal.
