UPDATE: Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas erotic thriller Deep Water headed straight to Hulu and Amazon

December 16, 2021 by Gary Collinson

A little over a month out from its scheduled release date, Disney and 20th Century Studios have pulled the upcoming Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas erotic thriller Deep Water from the theatrical calendar.

Based upon the 1957 novel by Patricia Highsmith, Deep Water marks the return of director Adrian Lyne (Fatal Attraction, 9 1/2 Weeks, Indecent Proposal) after a twenty year absence from the screen, with former real-life couple Affleck and de Armas starring in the filmmaker’s first feature since Unfaithful back in 2002.

The film sees Affleck and de Armas as “Vic and Melinda Van Allen, an attractive young married couple whose mind games with each other take a twisted turn when people around them start turning up dead. The couple staves off divorce in a loveless marriage by allowing each to take lovers, but it soon becomes messy.”

Deep Water is the now second Ana de Armas movie to find itself awaiting a new release date, with the No Time to Die star’s Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde from Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) also pulled from release this year by Netflix to avoid a crowded awards season.

UPDATE: It has now been confirmed that Deep Water is skipping a theatrical release completely and is heading directly to Hulu in the United States, with Amazon handling international distribution. As yet there is no word on a release date.
