Venom producer confirms Tom Hardy return for sequel, teases future Spider-Man crossover

June 22, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Last year saw the successful launch of ‘Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters’ with Venom, the Tom Hardy-headlined comic book adaptation defying critics (and early backlash against its marketing campaign) to gross an impressive $855 million worldwide.

With a hit in the bag, Sony wasted little time in setting two further Marvel movie dates – the Jared Leto-headlined Morbius the Living Vampire slated for July 10th 2020, followed by an ‘Untitled Sony/Marvel Sequel’ on October 2nd.

While we’re technically yet to get any official confirmation that the October release is Venom 2, the fact it’s described as a sequel doesn’t really leave any other alternative (assuming Sony isn’t planning to drop a surprise Morbius sequel three months after the first), and now producer Amy Pascal has confirmed that the Venom follow-up is indeed moving ahead, with Tom Hardy back as Eddie Brock.

“I can say that Tom Hardy will be back, magnificently playing that character as no one else can,” said Pascal. “It’s a couple of things. One of them is that Sony did a great job creating that franchise and giving it a life and giving it its own world. Then there’s Tom Hardy. When you think of Venom, you’ll never be able to think of anyone but Tom Hardy sitting in that bathtub of lobsters.”

Pascal was also asked about the possibility of Hardy’s Venom sharing the screen with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, despite the fact that (for the time being, at least) they exist in different universes: “Everybody would love to see that. You never know someday… it might happen.”

Considering that Sony’s deal with Marvel Studios is nearing its end, not to mention Marvel boss Kevin Feige’s comments this week that a crossover “seems likely at some point”, there’s sure to be a lot of speculation over the web-slinger’s future, and whether it will be as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or Sony’s rival Universe of Marvel Characters.
