Warner Bros. planning “formidable” Oscar campaign for Wonder Woman

July 30, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Having scored a critical and commercial hit with Wonder Woman, Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. is hoping the DC blockbuster can make a big splash this coming awards season.

According to the site, studio executives have been plotting a “formidable” awards season campaign for the Amazon Princess’ solo debut, and are looking to make it the first ever superhero movie nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, as well as securing a Best Director nomination for Patty Jenkins.

Warner Bros. is said to be hoping that the positive reception to the Academy screening of the film – and the expanded membership of the voting body – will help to boost the film’s Oscar chances.

The DC Extended Universe has enjoyed some Oscar success already, with Suicide Squad winning the Academy Award for Best Makeup earlier this year.

What do you make of Wonder Woman’s Best Picture chances? Is it worthy of a nomination? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman sees Patty Jenkins (Monster) directing a cast that includes Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Connie Nielsen (Gladiator), Robin Wright (House of Cards), Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (The Theory of Everything), Ewen Bremner (Snowpiercer), Said Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Force Majeure), Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead) and Ann Wolf.
