Warner Bros. rejected a Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe animated movie

October 15, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Ever since Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was released, many wondered if the concept could work in a different medium. It wasn’t just video games or comic fans that questioned it either; it seems like this was an actual idea floated around Warner Bros. Animation.

Writer Jeremy Adams (Justice League: Warworld) is known for his work with animation work in both Mortal Kombat and DC, and he claims in a new interview that he once pitched it to the studio as a new project.

ComicBook.com asked the writer if we could see a possible movie adaptation of the game, but fans of the idea were told to lower expectations. Adams suggests to the outlet, “I would lower your expectations. I don’t know if they have any plans to do more. I do know that we pitched that a while ago, but it was kind of rebuffed.”

He adds, “Well, I think at the end of the day, I don’t know if they’re ever going to do anymore. I hope they do, and I hope they call me to be involved. That would be great because I really love it. But I don’t know. I don’t know. I think it would be really cool, though. Trust me, I would love to see a DC Mortal Kombat. That would be super, super cool.”

The Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe video game was released in 2008 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with mixed reactions from fans of both brands. The game had toned-down violence compared to the MK franchise, and the DC characters were just thrust into the storyline with little care. While the game wasn’t a smash hit, it did lead to NetherRealm Studios launching two of its most successful games ever: Mortal Kombat 9 and the DC-themed fighter Injustice.

While the crossover event isn’t on the docket, Warner Bros. Animation recently confirmed plans for a new take on Watchmen and an adaptation of Crisis on Infinite Earths which are slated for release in 2024..
