WarnerMedia’s streaming service HBO Max sets launch date

April 21, 2020 by EJ Moreno

WarnerMedia has finally announced its highly anticipated streaming platform HBO Max will officially launch on May 27th, 2020. On top of that, the streamer dropped its slate of premium Max Originals that will be available to viewers on day one.

The subscription-based streaming service, with nearly 10,000 hours of content at launch, is priced at $14.99 monthly (the same as their current streamer HBO Now). While HBO Now houses all the titles for that brand, HBO Max will include third-party licensed content like Friends, The Big Bang Theory, South Park, and all Studio Ghibli films. The streamer will also include select content from CNN, TNT, TBS, truTV, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth, and Looney Tunes.

HBO Max also announced a slate of Max Originals that will be available at launch, which includes slate includes the scripted comedy Love Life, starring Anna Kendrick; Sundance 2020 Official Selection feature documentary On the Record; underground ballroom dance competition series Legendary; Craftopia, hosted by YouTube sensation LaurDIY; the all-new Looney Tunes Cartoons, from Warner Bros. Animation; and Sesame Workshop’s The Not Too Late Show with Elmo.

HBO Max will feature a library of more than 2,000 feature films within the first year. Audiences will be able to watch 700 blockbuster films via the HBO service, including Crazy Rich Asians, A Star is Born, Aquaman, and Joker, as well as movies acquired specifically for HBO Max via Warner Bros., like the Criterion Collection.

HBO Max will begin streaming on May 27th, 2020. Will you be subscribing? How do you think its content stacks up against its streaming rivals? Let us know in the comments or on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
