The Week in Spandex – Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel, Luke Cage, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Shazam, The Sinister Six and more

December 27, 2014 by Gary Collinson

…The Sony hack has given us plenty of details about Sony’s handling of the Spider-Man franchise these past few weeks, and now an email has emerged from Drew Goddard about his plans for The Sinister Six movie, which details how he planned to lure Tom Hardy to the role of Flint Marko, a.k.a. Sandman. In the email, Goddard states that his inspiration of classic “men on a mission” movies such as The Dirty Dozen, The Magnificent Seven and The Gungs of Navarone, and states that Hardy’s Sandman “is gonna strom through London at the end like God-fucking-zilla… He’s going to be AS TALL AS A SKYSCRAPER in the third act of the movie. What does Doctor Strange have? Magic tricks. Fuck you, magic tricks – we’ve got a skyscraper Tom Hardy knocking down buildings!!!” You can read Goddard’s full email here…

…Shifting to the DC Cinematic Universe now and while the rumours of a Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer proved to be false, this past week did give us some potential plot details for Warner’s next DC movie, the David Ayer-directed Suicide Squad. According to reports, WB held a focus group for the movie, during which it was revealed that Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) would be the protagonist of the film and is recruited to decipher a complex series of bombs planted by The Joker (Jared Leto) around Gotham. You can check out the full report here, including details of Deathstroke’s involvement in the film…

…When Warner Bros. made its big DC announcement a couple of months ago, it seemed that the studio had laid its DC plans out through to 2020. However, it now appears those plans are not quite set in stone, with Wonder Woman director Michelle MacLaren revealing that the Amazon Princess’ 2017 solo debut is yet to receive an official green light from the studio, nor does it have a script as yet. MacLaren was giving little else away, stating that: “I really, really, really can’t talk about this. I just picture a drone coming in over the hills and crashing through the glass and flying over here and putting duct tape over my mouth, you know..?”

…Last month, Dwayne Johnson suggested that the 2019 Shazam movie could be independent from the rest of Warner’s DC slate, however the DC Blog has now confirmed that all ten of the studio’s DC movies will exist within the same universe. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has admitted that he’d love to direct the Shazam movie, but is precluded from doing so, presumably due to his contract with Marvel Studios…

…On the small screen, FOX has released a featurette which recaps the first ten episodes of Gotham in just five minutes [see here], as well as releasing a selection of clips from the upcoming midseason premiere ‘Rogue’s Gallery’ [see here] and a batch of stills from the following episode ‘What The Little Bird Told Him’ [see here]…

…Earlier this month it was revealed that Mark Hamill is returning to the role of The Trickster – a part he played in the early 90s Flash TV show – in The CW’s rebooted take on the Scarlett Speedster, and Hamill has shared a few thoughts about revisiting the character: “Well listen, it’s really in the embryonic stages. We discussed it over the phone. I like these guys, what they’ve already done with the show. I’m a fan. I had watched all seven or eight episodes that they had at the time. When they asked me to be a part of it, the last thing I was thinking was that I would be returning to that specific role, but I think you’re going to be really pleased with what they’ve come up with. It was totally unexpected. I said this before [about Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Force Awakens]. It’s like putting on an old pair of pants in the back of the closet and finding out there’s a 20 dollar bill in the pocket. It’s like ‘Oh, wow! I forgot all about this!’ And it’s more enjoyable because it’s so unexpected…”

…Flickering Myth’s Martin Carr caught up with Constantine star Charles Halford this week for a Flickering Myth Podcast interview, during which Charles discusses the show, its ratings, and whether he thinks the series is heading for a second season. Give it a listen here…

… And finally, YouTuber Alex Luthor has posted a rather impressive three-and-a-half-minute fan-made trailer for Marvel vs. DC, splicing together footage from a selection of movies and TV shows featuring your favourite Marvel and DC heroes. Check it out here.
