Wendell Pierce to play Perry White in James Gunn’s Superman

March 2, 2024 by Ricky Church

With James Gunn’s Superman having begun filming now, The Hollywood Reporter has announced an additional piece of casting for the anticipated DC film. Wendell Pierce (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) will star in the film as Perry White, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet.

Perry White was introduced in the 1940s Superman radio serials before transferring over to the comics. He has been a staple of Superman’s mythology since, driving Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen to report the news accurately and honestly while battling corruption in Metropolis and standing up for the common citizen. Despite White’s gruff exterior, he’s a deeply compassionate man who cares for the well-being of his employees and is often a confidante to Lois, Clark and his alter-ego Superman. The character has been seen in several pieces of Superman media and played in the live-action films by Jackie Cooper, Frank Langella and Laurence Fishburne.

Pierce is most known for his role as Detective William ‘Bunk’ Moreland in HBO’s hit crime drama The Wire. He recently starred in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, which concluded with its fourth season, where he played CIA operative James Greer.

Superman tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Superman stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela De Faría as The Engineer and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

Superman will be released on July 11th, 2025.
