Witches to battle terrorists in Freeform’s Motherland: Fort Salem

March 10, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Freeform has announced that it has granted a series order to its drama pilot Motherland: Fort Salem, which takes place in an alternate America where witches struck a deal with the U.S. government some 300 years ago to end their persecution in exchange for fighting for their country.

Created and written by Eliot Laurence (Claws), the series “follows three young women from basic training in combat magic into early deployment. In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped, with the more dominant women on the front lines fighting looming terrorist threats that are familiar to our world — but with supernatural tactics and weapons.”

The pilot saw Taylor Hickson, Jessica Stutton and Kelcey Mawema as the three soldier witches, although Mawema’s role is being recast for the series, which also stars Amalia Holm and Demetria McKinney.

Motherland: Fort Salem is the second of Freeform’s pilots to be picked up to series this year after the Party of Five reboot.
