X-Men: The New Mutants is “a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers”

September 22, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Last week it was announced that production has wrapped on 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: The New Mutants, and now Fox’s Stacey Snider has been chatting to Variety about the Josh Boone-directed X-Men spinoff, describing it as “a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers”.

“If we’re going to make a superhero movie, we have to ask ourselves: ‘What’s our version? What’s a Fox Marvel film?'” said Snider. “When you look at films like Deadpool or Logan or the upcoming New Mutants, you’ll see they have their own personality. Great effort has been put into making sure they’re differentiated. New Mutants is about these teenagers who are just coming into their powers. It’s like watching mutants go through adolescence and they have no impulse control, so they’re dangerous. The only solution is to put them in a Breakfast Club detention/Cuckoo’s Nest institutional setting. It protects the people on the outside, but it’s strange and combustible inside. The genre is like a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers. We haven’t seen it as a superhero movie whose genre is more like The Shining than ‘we’re teenagers let’s save the world.’”

Fox certainly has been looking to ensure that its recent offerings such as Deadpool and Logan stand out from the superhero movie crowd, and with New Mutants having previously been described as “a full-fledged horror”, it certainly sounds like we can expect something a little different once again when the movie opens next year.

X-Men: The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), and features a cast includes Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball, Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Danielle Moonstar and Alice Braga (Queen of the South) as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. It is set for release on April 13th 2018.
