Xolo Maridueña isn’t ready to say goodbye to Cobra Kai

November 27, 2023 by Ricky Church

As the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai gets ready to resume production, one of its lead stars is not ready to say goodbye to the fan-favourite Karate Kid sequel series.

In an interview with Collider Xolo Maridueña, who plays Miguel in Cobra Kai, revealed his feelings on the series’ final episodes and reluctance to say goodbye to the characters as well as his fellow cast members.

“I feel so sad, bro,” Maridueña stated. “I started the show when I was 16. We’re gonna finish, and I’m gonna be 23, and I’m like, ‘Wait, I still have so many years to keep hanging out with you guys!’ I had so much fun. ‘Cobra Kai’ taught me so much of what I love and know about acting. On camera and off-camera, the people, the relationships that I made on that show, are ones that I’ll remember for my whole life. So, I’m forever grateful for it, and I know it’s damn not gonna be the last time that we meet.”

Despite the series ending, Maridueña didn’t rule out a continuation of some form or a reunion special between the cast, telling the outlet “I’m sure five years down the line we’ll do, like, ‘Cobra Kai Reunion’ or something.” In between that time, Maridueña may be busy in James Gunn’s new DC cinematic universe as he led this summer’s Blue Beetle and has been confirmed by Gunn to maintain the role going forward.

The possibility of a continuation isn’t that far fetched as series creators and showrunners Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald have previously hinted they could return to the world of San Fernando Valley. Not only that, but Sony recently announced a new Karate Kid film that will star both Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan where they will reprise their roles from the original Karate Kid trilogy and Cobra Kai and the 2010 Karate Kid remake Chan led. This is the first step in the studio’s attempt to further expand the franchise beyond Cobra Kai and establish a larger and continuous franchise.

Cobra Kai only filmed one episode of the sixth and final season before shutting production down due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Production is expected to resume in January 2024 with Netflix aiming for a later 2024 premiere.
