Zachary Levi thinks that Shazam can be the Guardians of the Galaxy of the DC Extended Universe

December 4, 2017 by Jordan Jones

Zachary Levi thinks that the upcoming Shazam film can fill a particular slot for the DCEU; one that, perhaps, Suicide Squad was supposed to fill, but obviously didn’t manage to.

At last weekend’s Heroes & Villains Fan Fest in California, Zachary Levi took to the stage, and talked a bit what Shazam! brings to the table, and what Marvel franchise it mirrors the most:

“James Gunn and the gang killed it. It brought so much heart and humor and yeah, I think it was kind of like this dark horse that took everybody by storm and I think Shazam kind of has the possibility to do that because Shazam’s not, for all intents and purposes, not Supes, it’s not Batman, it’s not Wonder Woman, it’s not what most of the people [expect].”

At this point, it’s hard to believe that there was a time when the general public had no idea who the Guardians of the Galaxy were. Perhaps Shazam! will be talked about in similar fashion, and maybe the film can even occupy that quirky/humorous vacuum that Warner Bros. seems really intent on filling.

Shazam is set for release on April 5th 2019, and sees David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) directing a cast that includes Zachary Levi as Shazam, Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana and Grace Fulton in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
