‘Every 3D Movie is the Same’

Have you ever stopped to think about it? Perhaps 3D isn’t a medium. Perhaps it’s actually a genre; one with its own stylistics, conventions and tones. Where Film Noir exhibits the interplay between light and shadow, 3D makes things fly at your face.

Funny or Die think as much in one of their latest skits:


But then again, maybe not. All those films made light of there – Battleship (Rihanna), Transformers 3: Revenge of the Fallen (Shia LeBoeuf), Men in Black 3 (Will Smith) – could all be classed as ‘action films’, rather than 3D ones.

Still, pretty spot on. Try taking a checklist with you the next time you see a summer blockbuster trailer.
