Is Callan Mulvey playing The Joker in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice?

May 25, 2014 by Gary Collinson

A couple of weeks ago director of photography Larry Fong posted an image of a playing card to his Instagram account, sparking speculation as to whether The Joker might appear in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Well gossip site TMZ has seemingly picked up the ball and ran with it, speculating that 300: Rise of an Empire star Callan Mulvey – who has been cast in the film in what Warner Bros. has described as a newly-created character – is set to portray the Clown Prince of Crime.

How have they reached this conclusion? 1) Mulvey’s character is yet to be revealed on the IMDb; 2) He’s got scars; and 3) He’s Australian (as was Heath Ledger). So of course, he has to be The Joker, right? Anyway, the site put the question to the actor, who replied: “I can’t say anything, man. I’m sworn to secrecy. You’re going to have to wait and see.”

Complete lack of evidence aside, Mulvey was tipped for a major villain role prior to the official announcement of his casting, and you’d have to imagine that Snyder is looking to up the villain quota seeing as the sequel is heavily weighted towards the hero side, with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Cyborg all included and only Lex Luthor confirmed as a bad guy so far. So, for what it’s worth, I actually think TMZ could be on the money, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw Harley Quinn too…

Would you like to see The Joker in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and if so, is Callan Mulvey a good pick for the role?

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set for release on May 6th 2016 with Zack Snyder directing a cast that includes returning Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent) and Laurence Fishburne (Perry White) alongside Ben Affleck (Argo) as Batman, Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jesse Eisenberg (Now You See Me) as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons (The Borgias) as Alfred Pennyworth and Holly Hunter (The Piano), Callan Mulvey (300: Rise of an Empire), and Tao Okamoto (The Wolverine) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
