James Gunn on the chances of The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy teaming up

July 25, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Last week, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn shot down the rumours about The Incredible Hulk meeting up with the Guardians for the inevitable sequel to the upcoming superhero space opera, stating that “I wouldn’t want the Hulk to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy.”

However, speaking to Digital Spy, it seems Gunn is more convinced that The Hulk may team up with the Guardians, albeit with the rest of the Avengers by his side, with the director stating that: “I think that there’s certainly a decent chance that in the near future some of the Guardians or some of the the Avengers, or the Guardians and the Avengers, or some permutation of that will meet at some point in time.”

Gunn is presumably referring to The Avengers 3, which is expected to see the superheroes squaring off against the cosmic villain Thanos (and for which Gunn has been rumoured as a potential director). However, there is of course the possibility that we’ll see the Guardians back for a sequel before Avengers 3, assuming the movie is a hit when it opens next week.

“I’ve been thinking about a sequel from the beginning. When I was setting up Guardians I wanted it to be a movie that worked by itself but also set up a whole galaxy of character that we could play with in different ways. I have tonnes of ideas of things we can do but we’ll just have to see how things go.”

Guardians of the Galaxy is set for release on July 31st in the UK and August 1st in North America, with a cast that includes Chris Pratt (The Lego Movie) as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora, Dave Bautista (Riddick) as Drax the Destroyer, Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) as Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious 6) as Groot, Benicio Del Toro (Sin City) as The Collector, Lee Pace (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) as Ronan the Accuser, Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) as Nebula, Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond) as Korath, John C. Reilly (Step Brothers) as Rhomman Dey,  Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead) as Yondu, Glenn Close (Damages) as Nova Prime Rael and Josh Brolin (Men in Black 3) as Thanos.
