New Line’s Toby Emmerich talks Shazam movie and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam

September 3, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Just a few hours ago Dwayne Johnson finally revealed his long-teased DC role, confirming that he’s set to play the villain Black Adam in a Shazam movie, and now Entertainment Weekly has managed to grab a few details about the DC project, which is being produced by Warner Bros. subsidiary New Line, and it appears it may be seperate from the shared DC universe WB is kickstarting with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice…

“It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself,” says New Line president Toby Emmerich. “It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies. [It] will have a sense of fun and a sense of humor. But the stakes have to be real.”

Emmerich also went on to touch upon The Rock’s role as Black Adam, stating that: “Black Adam is a complex character. The villain in superhero movies is often, I think, what makes the movie. And I thought Dwayne’s take on the character, and the way that he saw Black Adam, was really compelling and fun.”

As yet, there’s no word on a release date or director for Shazam, although Darren Lemke (Jack the Giant Slayer) is currently working on the script.
