After much speculation and rumour surrounding Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch has officially been announced as having secured the role of the Sorcerer Supreme in the Phase Three Marvel movie.
The film, directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister) with Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) writing the screenplay, will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.
Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios said ‘“Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity, in 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”
Originally it was reported that Joaquin Phoenix was the number one contender but after months of negotiations fell through, other actors were being considered.
Benedict Cumberbatch can next be seen in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies which is released this month.
