Anthony Mackie says Captain America: Civil War “is gonna be Avengers 3.8”

January 16, 2015 by Gary Collinson

When you look at the cast list for Captain America: Civil War – which includes Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) and, potentially, Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) – you’d be forgiven for thinking that Marvel was launching Phase Three of its Cinematic Universe with another Avengers movie.

Well, according to Anthony Mackie – who is set to reprise the role of Sam Wilson / Falcon from last year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier – that’s pretty much what we’ll be getting from the 2016 sequel, with Mackie describing the film as Avengers 3.8 during an interview with WTTG Fox 5 (via CBM):

“I will tell you this: Cap 3 is gonna be everything you can imagine. Cap 2 was really Avengers 1.5, and Cap 3 is gonna be Avengers 3.8… It’s so amazing to be a part of the Marvel universe. It’s so rare that you go into a movie, and you know the movie is gonna be good. And Marvel does not settle for mediocre on any of their movies. And that is what’s so great. You can go as far as you want because you know they are going to make it look good.”

Asked whether he’d like to take on the mantle of Captain America one day – much like Sam Wilson has in the comic books – Mackie responded that: “My thing is, I’ve done one of these movies. I love working with Chris [Evans], he’s one of my closest friends. So, as long as it’s me and Chris playing Falcon and Cap, I’m all cool with being Falcon.”

Captain America: Civil War will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and will also see the return of Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier), and Frank Grillo (Brock Rumlow/Crossbones), while Daniel Bruhl (Rush) has signed on for an as-yet-unrevealed role.
