Comic Book Review – Star Trek #40

January 15, 2015 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch reviews Star Trek #40…

It’s the epic finale of “The Q Gambit”! The fate of the past, present and future are at stake as Kirk, Sisko and Spock face off with the mad Cardassian Dukat… and discover the secret behind Q’s machinations in their timeline! Don’t miss this climactic chapter in the STAR TREK event of 2014, produced in association with TREK writer/producer Roberto Orci!

We arrive at the final chapter of Mike Johnson’s alternative Trek Universe in which we’ve witnessed a handful of Trek regulars be brutally murdered, Earth under the rule of the Klingons, and the Federation nothing more than Rebel Scum thanks to the Dominion owning most of the known galaxy.  The Q Gambit has been an excellent ride, but with all series it all comes down to whether the final part can go out with a bang and not a whimper.

Our final part is extremely fast paced and it’s here were we finally find out what the “No Win” scenario has been all along and it’s more on Q’s plate than anybody else’s.  It appears that all these God-like beings have been getting on okay with each other up to a point, but thanks to issues raised in the NuTrek universe the Pah-Wraiths have become that bit too big for their boots and after they’ve destroyed nearly all the Prophets their sights are now set on the Continuum; rather scary is they may have a good chance of defeating them.  This is Q’s reason for pulling Kirk and Co. from their current time.  What Q doesn’t explain is if this future Kirk and Co. see is going to happen or could happen and after the story comes to a close Kirk and Spock mull over their possible fate.

The question is though, “Is this a good close?”  I have to say it is, but there are issues that bother me, for example the Pah-Wraiths are posing a threat to the entire Continuum so only Q is sent and then he decides to pluck Kirk not Picard out of time to help?  If in the future the Klingons have taken over Earth is Section 31 right and should Kirk and Spock be telling the Federation to build a BFG, plus a few more copies of the USS Vengeance for good measure?  Will we soon be seeing a War Trek?  Putting these questions to one side this was a frantic, action-packed comic and once again Mike Johnson makes sure that another Trek name is etched into the marble remembrance wall.

The Q Gambit has been an exciting alternative breath of fresh air for us Star Trek fans and you’d do well seeking out this series if you haven’t already.

Villordsutch likes his sci-fi and looks like a tubby Viking according to his children. Visit his website and follow him on Twitter.
