Agent Carter Season 1 Episode 5 Review – “The Iron Ceiling”

February 4, 2015 by Amy Richau

Amy Richau reviews the fifth episode of Agent Carter…

Agent Carter’s fifth episode of eight, “The Iron Ceiling”, starts with a flashback of a Russian boarding school for girls which is, shall we say, a bit intense. And by intense what I mean is that the girls are shackled to their beds at night, and when your teacher nods at you that means you get to kill one of your friends.

This freaky flashback shows Peggy’s current boarding house neighbor Dottie as a child and in “The Iron Ceiling” we see how she is spying on Peggy . . . and is clearly a bit crazy. Bridget Regan is wonderfully kooky/creepy as Dottie and I can’t wait to see where this storyline will take her.

Finally in “The Iron Ceiling” Agent Carter gets to be the hero in front of her SSR co-workers/doubters. No more hiding in the shadows. After breaking a Russian code and arranging a meet-up with the Howling Commando’s Carter’s boss Agent Dooley has no choice but to let her go on the mission to find Leviathan and Howard Stark’s weapons.

Several SSR agents have turning points that all make them much more appealing than they have been in previous episodes. Dooley does a bit more investigating on his own and begins to accept that Howard Stark might not be a traitor after all, Sousa finally connects the dots that Peggy is the blonde woman in the photo he’s been staring at for weeks, and Thompson finally realizes that Peggy is not only his equal – she’s actually someone he can learn from.

The most entertaining parts of “The Iron Curtain” involve Peggy reuniting with the Howling Commandos. I wish these guys could be in more episodes. After weeks of Peggy working in secret it was a relief to see her back in an environment where she was valued and trusted.

A lot of things seemed to be going Peggy’s way in “The Iron Ceiling” and so of course trouble is clearly on the horizon. Hopefully Jarvis will have a bigger role in Episode six of Agent Carter as I missed Jarvis and Carter’s growing partnership in this otherwise quite entertaining episode.
