Dwayne Johnson talks Black Adam role in Shazam, and squaring off against Batman and Superman

February 11, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Speaking to Total Film in the latest issue of the magazine (via GamesRadar), Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has been discussing his upcoming role as Black Adam in Warner Bros.’ 2019 DC movie Shazam!, and eventually squaring off against the likes of Batman and Superman.

“I think Black Adam is going to grow into becoming an anti-hero,” states Johnson. “It’s all written within the spirit of respecting and paying homage to the comics. As we know, Black Adam started out as a slave. When he’s given the powers, he utilised them. Then in the wake of his powers, tragedy strikes, which turns his sentiment and tone in terms of psychology.”

It had been suggested a few months back that the Shazam movie would exist in a seperate continuity to the main DC universe, but Johnson has dismissed those claims, adding that:

“It was all agreed that the worlds are all interconnected… One day you will see Black Adam go at it with Superman or Batman or any of the DC characters. But that said, there’s a great independence to Black Adam from the DC world, allowing us to inject, not only viciousness, but also winking humour.”

Shazam is set for release on April 5th 2019.
