Marvel’s new Spider-Man likely to be non-white?

February 23, 2015 by admin

Since the announcement of Marvel and Sony coming to a deal over the rights to Spider-Man which will see the wall crawler interact within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there has been discussion of whether or not we’ll see the first big screen version of Spider-Man that isn’t Peter Parker. Several casting articles (including our own) raised the possibility of using Miles Morales instead of the classic Parker version of the character.

Well, according to The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider, it could be very likely we won’t be seeing a white Spider-Man in the new movie.

“Listen, this is not set in stone guys, but I’m telling you right now, Spider-Man’s not going to be white,” he told Meet the Movie Press Podcast. “Spider-Man’s not going to be white. I’m 95% sure. Spider-Man’s going to be most likely black. But there’s a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure, not white.”

Sneider doesn’t say outright that it will be Miles Morales but does add, “I don’t think it’s going to be Peter Parker.”

“Sony has an opportunity to beat Marvel and DC to the punch with a major black comic book character,” Sneider adds, alluding to the Sony email hacks being a major catalyst in this possible decision. “Like I mentioned last week, the emails that leaked were perceived as racist in some quarters. I really think that’s going to play into things.”

As with any rumour at this point, best to take this with a grain of salt. But would you be excited to see a non-white Spider-Man?
