Avengers: Age of Ultron opens to record-breaking international debut on Wednesday

April 24, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

Early indications from the international opening day for Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron have the film already breaking records.

The superhero sequel opened in 11 foreign markets on Wednesday, claiming first place  in each of those markets and grossing an estimated $9.5 million on its first day. France saw the biggest opening with $2.7 million, which was 13% ahead of its predecessor, while the film scored the best opening day ever in two Asian territories, with $1.6 million in the Philippines, and $900k in Indonesia, with the later a massive 99% better than The Avengers.

The film also smashed records in Taiwan and Italy, where it bettered all the other previous Marvel films. The numbers are set to soar even further by Friday, with its hugely anticipated release in the UK on Thursday.

The Avengers opened to a $185 million across foreign markets in 2012, and the new film is expected to follow suit despite opening in less territories in the first weekend this time around. Estimates put the film’s opening between $160 million and $200 million, while record-breaking numbers are expected in the films US debut next weekend.
