Kevin Smith wants to bring DC’s The Question to the big screen

Kevin Smith may be one of the biggest superhero fans in the world, but has yet to direct a comic book film. In fact, the closest he ever came was his brief stint as one of the writers on Tim Burton’s cancelled Superman Lives in the 1990s. That doesn’t mean the Tusk helmer doesn’t want to do it; in fact, he’s expressed interest in a rather peculiar second-tier character: The Question.

For the uninitiated, The Question is the alter ego of Vic Sage, a private detective who dons a mask made from an artificial skin-like substance called Pseudoderm which, coupled with a binary gas, virtually erases all of his facial features. It’s quite a jarring and unique look, which is exactly what draws Smith to the character. While speaking at the Produced By conference in Los Angeles, Smith described the “noir-ish thriller” angle he’d give the character:

“I always thought if you were in an alley and f-icking Batman showed up you’d be like, ‘Oh, f-, Batman.’ But if a dude shows up with no features and starts punching you, you would probably kill yourself in fear.”

As intriguing a prospect as a Kevin Smith-directed Question film is, it’s not likely to happen anytime soon, if at all. Warner Brothers currently has its hands full with an ambitious slate of DC Comics films stretching until 2020, all focusing on some of the biggest and most popular characters in the DC pantheon. We’re more likely to see the character pop up somewhere in the DC TV universe, in which case Smith probably wouldn’t be involved.
