William Hurt on returning as Thunderbolt Ross in Captain America: Civil War

June 25, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Back at the start of May, it was announced that The Incredible Hulk star William Hurt will be reprising the role of General Thunderbolt Ross for next year’s Phase Three-launching Captain America: Civil War, and Hurt has been speaking about returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in an interview with IGN.

“Well first of all it was delightful to get that call,” said Hurt. “And second of all… how am I going to catch this train? Or how am I going to catch this 747? Because it can’t land for you. It’s got to keep going… I loved playing Ross the first time because I was able to try and create an ego as big as the monster he was chasing. And one that was as warped too. [Ross in Civil War] is different because it’s a different style. It’s a more modernized style. And what they’ve done is they’ve taken a character who was the Ross from the older film and made a new version. This is a much newer Ross. A much different Ross. And I liked that a lot. I haven’t had a lot of time to understand it, but I’m doing the best I can. And they haven’t fired me yet.”

Might this”much newer Ross” include a Red Hulk alter-ego? Well, that’s what rumours suggest, but Hurt wasn’t given anything away either way when asked about the Red Hulk by the Wall Street Journal: “I don’t know, I wouldn’t mind feeling like I had that much power but I created Thaddeus originally as an ego the same size as the monster’s, with the same degree of messed upness. Yeah, I’d love to have a shot at it.”

Captain America: Civil War is set for release on April 29th 2016 in the UK and May 6th 2016 in the States, with Anthony and Joe Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) directing a cast that includes Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America), Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier), Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (The Vision), Don Cheadle (James Rhondes/War Machine), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter) and Frank Grillo (Brock Rumlow/Crossbones) and William Hurt (General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross) alongside new additions Chadwick Boseman (Get on Up) as T’Challa/Black Panther, Daniel Bruhl (Rush) as Baron Zemo, Tom Holland (The Impossible) as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
