Although initial tracking had put it in the $40 – $50 million bracket, it seems the flood of negative reviews and poor word of mouth on Fantastic Four is set to result in a domestic opening weekend of around $25 million.

The $120 million-budgeted film debuted to just $2.7 million from showings in the States on Thursday, and could even lose out on first place this weekend to Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.
Should Fantastic Four pull in less than $30 million, it would be the lowest opening for a Marvel-branded movie since Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance debuted with $22 million in 2012, with only Blade ($17 million), Blade: Trinity ($16 million), The Punisher ($13.8 million) Elektra ($12.8 million), Howard the Duck ($5 million) and Punisher: War Zone ($4.3 million) ever having opened with less.

Fantastic Four is set to hit theaters on August 7th, with Josh Trank (Chronicle) directing a cast that includes Miles Teller (Whiplash) as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Kate Mara (House of Cards) as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, Jamie Bell (Nymphomaniac) as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as Doctor Doom, Reg E. Cathey (House of Cards) as Dr. Storm, and Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk) as Harvey Elder/Mole Man.
