Arrow Season 4 Episode 4 Review -‘Beyond Redemption’

October 29, 2015 by Jessie Robertson

Jessie Robertson reviews the fourth episode of Arrow season 4…

New Headquarters! New Individual Pods! Bio-Fiber Costumes!

I am going to make this one brief this week: Reviewers of anything sometimes can’t comment on every detail of whatever it is they are viewing but simply sometimes focus on the important, the guts, the gold they find in that thing. This week, we got a scene that fulfilled a lot of unspoken emotions on Arrow nearly since episode 1 and it was utterly brilliant. It was two characters, with a ton of history, most of it negative, getting real with each other. I’m speaking of Oliver Queen and Quentin Lance. The duality of both men’s struggle just made this so brilliant, every little nuance and delivery of each line, the guilt and disappointment and heartache on both men’s faces was raw and some of the best acting on this show or Flash I’ve seen. The line where Oliver tells Lance that there’s always been a part of him that wanted Lance to know he’s a good man was that deep stuff you feel but never share and he put it out there. If you skip every single minute of this episode, make sure you watch this.

7.5/10- Lance had so many great scenes tonight, as well as a few speeches but him and Oliver in his apartment was true money; really the best thing far and away for this episode

Other Notes:
– Lance also has a very hard scene where he intends to shoot Sara (who seems to be acting like a confused monkey more than a person) and really goes for it again. We’ve found a man who has lost his daughter, nearly died himself, and gotten into bed with a really bad guy because he thought it was best for the city he loves, his home (he even states in the scene I gushed about earlier , in passing, about how the Arrow wasn’t here, with almost a longing quality to it). You never think he’s going to do it even if he does and with Laurel there, just a well of emotion bursts open like a ruptured dam. Kudos, major kudos to Paul Blackthorne for getting so many great chances to show how layered this character is, as he’s always been near the top of the list of my favorites here.
– Sara escaped too; there were some rogue cops with some pretty bad-ass gear and Curtis thinks Neal Adams is the Green Arrow.
