Damian Lewis now bookmakers favourite for the next James Bond

October 1, 2015 by Gary Collinson

With less than a month to go until the release of Spectre, the 24th official James Bond adventure, speculation is at an all time high as to who will become the next 007 after Daniel Craig, and everyone has an opinion.

During last year’s Sony hack, it emerged that Idris Elba was a favourite of then studio chief Amy Pascal, with the Luther star garnering plenty of support, including an endorsement from former 007 Pierce Brosnan (although Roger Moore and author Anthony Horowitz weren’t quite as sold on the idea).

Last December, Elba was inserted as the bookmaker’s favourite for the role, although in June odds were slashed on Damian Lewis (Homeland) after a flurry of betting, with rumours emerging just this week which claimed that Lewis has already been offered the role and is unofficially in place to become the seventh actor to take on the role in the long-running film franchise.

Just today, current Bond Daniel Craig revealed that he’s contracted for one more movie after Spectre, and that he’s “not going to make predictions” as to when he’ll step down. But, it seems pretty clear at this point that Sony, MGM and Eon will be looking to the next actor to take on the role of the suave super spy.

Given this week’s reports, this betting site has now firmly installed Damian Lewis as the evens favourite to succeed Craig, while other contenders include Tom Hardy (2/1), Idris Elba (5/2), Michael Fassbender (6/1), Nicholas Hoult (6/1), Henry Cavill (10/1), Jack O’Connell (20/1), Hugh Jackman (20/1), Andrew Lincoln (35/1) and Orlando Bloom (50/1).

Who do you think will be the next Bond? Let us know in the comments below…

Spectre is set for release in the UK on October 23rd in the UK and November 6th in the States. The film sees Sam Mendes (Skyfall) directing Bond veterans Daniel Craig as James Bond, Rory Kinnear as Tanner, Ben Whishaw as Q, Naomie Harris as Eve Moneypenny, Ralph Fiennes as M and Jesper Christensen as Mr. White, alongside franchise newcomers Andrew Scott (Pride) as Denbigh, Lea Seydoux (Blue is the Warmest Colour) as Madeleine Swann, Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) as Mr. Hinx, Monica Bellucci (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) as Lucia Sciarra and Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) as Oberhauser.
