Arnold won’t be back as Paramount officially pulls the plug on Terminator Genisys sequel

January 20, 2016 by Gary Collinson

It looks like a decent international performance at the box office hasn’t been enough to convince Paramount Pictures that a sequel to Terminator Genisys is worth the investment, as the studio has now officially pulled the tentatively – and hideously – titled Terminator 2 from its planned May 19th 2017 release date.

Terminator Genisys was intended as a relaunch of the franchise, and the first of a new trilogy of films. However, it received some scathing reviews upon release last year, and flopped domestically with just $89.8 million. It performed better in international markets, pulling in $350.8 million (including $113.2 million in China), and there had been talk that its $440.6 million worldwide gross would have been enough to get the sequel the green light.

Terminator Genisys was directed by Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) and saw Arnold Schwarzenegger leading a cast that also includes Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Jai Courtney (Suicide Squad), Matt Smith (Doctor Who), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), Courtney B. Vance (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), Byung-hun Lee (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Dayo Okeniyi (The Hunger Games), Michael Gladis (Mad Men), Sandrine Holt (House of Cards) and Douglas Smith (Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters).
