Star Wars: The Force Awakens passes Jurassic World to become the third biggest movie of all-time

January 11, 2016 by admin

Following the news that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the first film in history to pass $800 million domestically, it can now lay claim to being the third biggest film of all-time.

With its weekend takings of $41.6 million domestically, Star Wars: The Force Awakens also brought its worldwide total to $921 million – giving it a global total of $1.78 billion. This means the film has surpassed Jurassic World‘s $1.69 billion, and puts it just behind Titanic‘s $2.1 billion. Disney and Lucasfilm were hoping that a strong opening in China could help it steer its way to the number one spot, but that remains to be seen. The film did open to $53 million – which is good – but that might not be enough for the sci-fi epic to topple Avatar‘s $2.7 billion.
