Nicholas Meyer joins writing team for new Star Trek TV series, Tony Todd on casting shortlist

February 26, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Earlier this month CBS’ new Star Trek TV series found a showrunner in Bryan Fuller, whose early writing credits included Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, and now another Trek veteran has joined the writing team in Nicholas Meyer.

“Nicholas Meyer chased Kirk and Khan ‘round the Mutara Nebula and ‘round Genesis’ flames, he saved the whales with the Enterprise and its crew, and waged war and peace between Klingons and the Federation,” states Fuller. “We are thrilled to announce that one of Star Trek’s greatest storytellers will be boldly returning as Nicholas Meyer beams aboard the new Trek writing staff.”

Meyer directed both Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, as well as co-writing both screenplays along with Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which was helmed by Leonard Nimoy.

Meanwhile, another Trek alumnus Tony Todd – who appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, has told the MORTIS podcast that he’s on the shortlist to join the new series.

“CBS is doing their own series again… I’m on a very short [casting] list. It’s a year away. They’re not even going to get official cast until, probably, the fourth quarter of the year. And my only concern about it is that it’s going to be that [CBS All Access] online thing; I don’t understand that part. I’ve never done a series regular — I’ve always avoided it because I like playing different characters — but this is one year that we’re looking at some stuff, so I’m sure that we’re going to be popping up and everybody’s going to move on sometime very soon.”
