John Boyega says Star Wars: Episode VIII is darker and bigger than The Force Awakens

May 14, 2016 by Amie Cranswick

John Boyega has taken a short break from filming on Star Wars: Episode VIII to attend the Cannes Film Festival, during which Variety managed to get a few words from the British star about how he’s finding director Rian Johnson after working with J.J. Abrams on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“It’s very easy,” states Boyega. “Rian Johnson is great. It’s a different take, darker, bigger. Someone will say: “How do you get bigger than Force Awakens?’ But it’s crazy.”

Asked about the possibility of romance between his character Finn and Daisy Ridley’s Rey, Boyega replied that: “We didn’t establish a romance in seven; we never played it that way. Finn and Rey – they’re just friends. Finn is a stormtrooper, so he doesn’t really know what’s going on. So the romance thing is something that’s going to be interesting in the next installment. It’s not going to go the way you think it’s going to go.”
