Karen Gillan on Nebula’s role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Infinity War

January 20, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Earlier this week we brought you some comments from Karen Gillan, who revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will delve into the past of Nebula, and her complicated relationships with her father Thanos and sister Gamora. Now the actress has been chatting to THR about the hotly-anticipated Marvel sequel, reiterating that the theme of family will be a major element of the film, and how this will help us to see a more human side of the character.

“I’m so excited for people to see it! I just feel like it’s all of the best elements of the first one, just amplified. It’s even better – it’s funnier, the music’s even better … the second album is a blinder. It’s great. And in the first one everyone was being established. Now that that’s out of the way, you really get to delve into all of their dilemmas and things like that. I think family would really be the main theme of the thing. And my character Nebula is dealing with a whole lot of stuff there – we see a whole new side to her. A much more human side actually, where we understand how truly awful and difficult her daddy issues are.”

Gillan also recently confirmed her involvement in Avengers: Infinity War, and she briefly shared a few words of excitement about the 2018 release: “Yeah, she’s making a cheeky appearance there. I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say, but I’m pretty happy with how much she gets to do.”

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled for release on April 28th 2017 in the UK and on May 5th in the States, with director James Gunn reuniting with returning cast members Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Glenn Close (Nova Prime) and Sean Gunn (Kraglin) alongside new additions Pom Klementieff (Oldboy) as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) as Ayesha, Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight) as Ego the Living Planet, Chris Sullivan (The Drop) as Taserface and Sylvester Stallone (Creed) in as yet-unrevealed role.
