Gotham showrunners on the introduction of The Joker

June 15, 2014 by Gary Collinson

While The Dark Knight will be absent from Gotham, FOX’s upcoming Batman prequel series will explore the origins of some of the Caped Crusader’s greatest foes, with the likes of Oswald Cobblepot (The Penguin), Edward Nygma (The Riddler) and Selina Kyle (Catwoman) all set to feature in the pilot. And now showrunners Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon have been talking to MoviePilot about their plans to introduce another iconic member of Batman’s Rogues Gallery in the Clown Prince of Crime.

“I would say [The Joker] is, for everyone involved to a degree because it’s about the villains, he’s the crown jewel in the villains’ crown. So we’re going to be very careful and thoughtful about how we roll that character out,” said Heller, with Cannon adding that: “We have the luxury in nobody’s ever really delved way back [into The Joker’s history]. The amount of thought and time we’ve been allowed to give that is terrific because when we finally do reveal the ‘real’ Joker, and that’s a tip, it will be very thought out and worth the wait.”

Are you looking forward to exploring the backstory of The Joker in Gotham?

Gotham is set to get underway on Monday evenings on FOX in the Fall with a cast that includes Ben McKenzie (Southland) as Detective Gordon, Sean Pertwee (Elementary) as Alfred Pennyworth, Donal Logue (Sons of Anarchy) as Harvey Bullock, newcomer Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, David Mazouz (Touch) as Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor (Another Earth) as Oswald Cobblepot, Cory Michael Smith (Olive Kitteridge) as Edward Nygma, Jada Pinkett Smith (The Matrix) as Fish Mooney, Zabryna Guevara (The Guilt Trip) as Detective Essen, Victoria Cartagena (Salt) as Renee Montoya, Andrew Stewart Jones (The Tomorrow People) as Crispus Allen, Erin Richards (Being Human) as Barbara Kean and Drew Powell (Malcolm in the Middle) as Butch Gilzean.
