Guillermo del Toro working on Pacific Rim 2 script with Zak Penn

June 8, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Last month Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull gave an update on Pacific Rim 2, suggesting that there was nothing to announce with regards to a follow-up to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 kaiju homage. However, speaking to Buzzfeed, del Toro has now revealed that he’s currently working on a script for the sequel alongside Zak Penn, whose credits include Last Action Hero, Elektra, X-Men: The Last Stand and The Incredible Hulk, in addition to the story for X2 and The Avengers.

“I’m working very, very hard with Zak Penn. We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film, now working on Fox’s Hieroglyph] was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul. I don’t have the money, but I’m proceeding like it is happening… Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion. I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”

Del Toro also went on to reveal that the story will follow the first movie, with Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) both included in the script.
