Paul Feig said to be Sony’s first choice to direct Ghostbusters 3 for a reboot focussing on female Ghostbusters

August 2, 2014 by Gary Collinson

With the long-awaited Ghostbusters threequel seemingly edging towards production (after the best part of two decades of development), it appears that Sony has found a director its gonna call for Ghostbusters III, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) is the frontrunner to take over from Ghosbusters and Ghostbusters II helmer Ivan Reitman.

Reitman was originally attached to direct the film but decided to pass after the death of his friend and star Harold Ramis earlier in the year. Since then a host of directors have been rumoured, including Ruben Fleischer (Zomebieland) and Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie), but if this new report is to be believed, Feig is now the studio’s first choice, although negotiations are yet to have taken place.

According to Dan Aykroyd, Ghostbusters III will start shooting in Spring 2015, with Aykroyd reprising the role of Ray Stanz alongside Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore), Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett) and Rick Moranis (Louis Tully). It remains unknown whether Bill Murray has any interest in another outing as Peter Venkman.

Update: According to THR, Ghostbusters III will see the original Ghostbusters passing the baton to a new team of female Ghostbusters, in what the site is describing as a reboot.
