LEGO Movie 2 will feature more female characters

November 17, 2014 by admin

The LEGO Movie has been one of the surprise hits of 2014, not just in terms of critical praise but box office success with a worldwide total takings of $468 million. It was unsurprising then that the sequel announced and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller would be reprising their roles as writers and directors. And, if they get their way, we should be seeing some more female characters in the next movie.

“It’s important to us that the movie plays broadly and that we inspire young women as much as we inspire young men,” Lord told the BBC.

“I don’t want to give spoilers,” Miller adds. “But there will be more female characters and more female stuff… There’s been a real shortage of [female protagonists] in recent years and I think that the near future will be very different.”

The first movie had two main female characters in the form of Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) and UniKitty (Alison Brie) with Wonder Woman (Cobie Smulders) providing some brief support. So with all these teases – including DC vs Marvel for the sequel – you’d think Lord and Miller would be storming ahead with the script, right?

“You would think there would be be more pieces in place but all we’ve written is ‘Fade in..,'”

The LEGO Movie is out now on DVD and Blu-Ray.
