Justin Lin to direct Star Trek 3, release date revealed

December 23, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Paramount Pictures has found its replacement for Roberto Orci in the director’s chair on Star Trek 3, with Deadline revealing that Justin Lin (director of four of the Fast & Furious films) signing on to helm the threequel.

Lin was said to have been on a shortlist of directors for the job which also included Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), and Duncan Jones (Source Code). It’s said that Lin was the only one offered the job, and was available after his next project – a sequel to The Bourne Legacy – was postponed by Universal.

As yet there’s no official word on a release date for Star Trek 3, but it is assumed it will arrive in 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of the sci-fi franchise.

UPDATE: Star Trek 3 has now been confirmed to hit cinemas on July 8th, 2016.
