Patrick Stewart may join Wolverine 3, Ian McKellen returning for X-Men: Apocalypse

February 10, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

With the news (which we reported at Flickering Myth) that director Bryan Singer is in pre-production on the latest X-Men blockbuster, X-Men: Apocalypse, some other interesting news on the plans possibly in place for the rest of the X-Universe.

Professor X (well, the older version) himself Patrick Stewart has been speaking this week to Oregon Live while promoting his new film Match, and has revealed some interesting tidbits on what he knows about the fate of his character, as well as that of Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman. It seems that older Xavier could be returning to team up with Wolverine in Jackman’s next solo movie. Stewart said:

“What I’m very excited about is that we have been talking about a Wolverine movie, which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together. Wolverine and Professor Xavier. That would be a very different sort of X-Men from the four movies that I’ve already done.”

Last summer, X-Men: Days of Future Past reset the entire X-Men universe timeline, so it is unclear at present where the third Wolverine film would sit amongst it, especially with numerous reports of Jackman’s involvement in Apocalypse (still unconfirmed) and the fact that the Aussie actor has spoke about possibly hanging up his claws in the near future.

Furthermore, it seems that Xavier and Wolverine won’t be alone in returning, with Stewart also mentioning that Sir Ian McKellan will be back in some respect as Magneto in X-Men: Apocalypse:

“Yes, I understand that it seems to be very unlikely that I will be in the next X-Men movie, which is almost getting ready to start shooting in Montreal. But Magneto, Ian McKellen, is certainly going to be in it.”

What do you think of the potential team-up of Stewart and Jackman in their own film?

X-Men: Apocalypse stars the returning Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, Evan Peters and Nicholas Hoult, alongside new additions Tye Sheridan as young Cyclops, Sophie Turner as young Jean Grey, Alexandra Shipp as young Storm and Oscar Isaac as villain En Sabah Nur / Apocalypse.
