UPDATE: Fast & Furious 7 overtakes The Avengers to become the third-biggest film of all time

June 24, 2015 by Gary Collinson

UPDATE: It seems the figures that were being reported were inaccurate, with Box Office Mojo confirming that Fast & Furious 7 currently remains in fourth place at present with $1.511 billion.

Universal Pictures has two reasons to celebrate this month. Not only is Jurassic World shattering box office records left, right and centre, but its action sequel Fast & Furious 7 has just overtaken Marvel’s The Avengers to become the third-biggest film of all time.

Furious 7 has pulled in $351 million domestically and a whopping $1.169 billion from international markets to give the James Wan-directed sequel $1.52 billion around the globe, edging out the $1.518 billion earned by The Avengers back in 2012.

In terms of this year’s releases, Avengers: Age of Ultron is currently sitting on $1.368 billion and looks certain to fall short of its predecessor, while Jurassic World amassed a billion after just 13 days on release, and will likely challenge Furious 7 for third place in the coming weeks. And of course we have Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December, which is all but assured to further shake up the top five.

Fast & Furious 7 stars Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, and Lucas Black alongside new additions Kurt Russell, Jason Statham, Ronda Rousey, Tony Jaa, Nathalie Emmanuel, John Brotherton and Djimon Hounsou.
