Marvel’s Star Wars #6 introduces a huge change to the Star Wars canon

June 3, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Warning. Spoilers follow…

Back in April 2014, Disney announced that it was introducing a new canon for Star Wars, which would consist of the original six movies, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and all subsequent Lucasfilm releases going forward. Not just movies and animated series, but books, comics, video games and so on. With that being said, Marvel’s Star Wars #6 has just introduced a huge change to the Star Wars canon. Take a look…

Yes, you read that correctly. Han Solo – who spent much of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi wooing Princess Leia – is a married man. Or at least, he is between A New Hope and Empire, which is when this comic takes place.

This is where The Force Awakens comes in. It’s rumour and speculation, but if you don’t want to run the risk of being spoiled, turn back now…

Now, when Episode VII was first announced, I think everyone pretty much expected that Han and Leia would be married (with kids). However, there have been rumours suggesting that the couple have been estranged in the years following Return of the Jedi. Could Han’s marriage to Sana Solo have something to do with that? Surely bigamy is a crime in the New Republic…

There is of course the possibility that the comic could have a twist up its sleeve, or that Sana Solo could be killed off in the next few issues, but if Disney is serious about a cohesive canon across all of its Star Wars properties, then this is certainly a huge revelation, and one that you’d expect to have at least some kind of ramifications going forward. So, might we see Sana in The Force Awakens, or the oft-rumoured Han Solo spinoff movie? And what do you make of this twist? Let us know in the comments below…
