Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One set for 2017

August 6, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Back in March it was revealed that Steven Spielberg is to direct an adaptation of Ernest Cline’s cult sci-fi book Ready Player One, and now its been revealed that Warner Bros., Village Roadshow and DreamWorks have set a December 15th 2017 release date for the film.

“Any film from Steven Spielberg is an event film, so it felt right to date this thrilling new project from one of our greatest filmmakers for the holiday season,” said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros.’ president of domestic distribution.

Ready Player One takes place in 2044 and follows a teenager called Wade Watts, who spends his time in the OASIS, a virtual world which offers an escape from his dystopian surroundings. Before his death, the creator of the virtual reality game offered up his company to any player who could locate a hidden Easter egg, and Wade sets out to succeed where millions have failed, tracking it down by solving a series of clues based upon 1980s pop culture.
