Disney to re-release the theatrical cuts of the original Star Wars trilogy, according to John Landis

September 19, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Here’s some potentially exciting news for fans of the original Star Wars trilogy, with Empire reporting that director John Landis has revealed that Disney is planning to finally re-release the unaltered theatrical cuts of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

At a Q&A tonight John Landis dropped that Disney are finally going to re-release the theatrical cuts of the original Star Wars trilogy.

Apparently George mentioned it when last they spoke. Somebody put Yub Nub on. Let the celebrations commence!

At present, there’s no word on whether this will take the form of a theatrical reissue or a new Blu-ray release, and neither Disney nor Lucasfilm have commented on the report.

While the claims are unconfirmed at this point, it was rumoured back in August that Disney had plans to release the original cuts on Blu-ray and are busy remastering the negatives. However, to do so, Disney would need to reach an agreement with Fox, who holds the distribution rights to the first six movies, and it’s a little odd that such a huge deal could have been reached without it making headlines.
