Sony sets The Theory of Everything screenwriter for Freddie Mercury biopic

November 20, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Sony’s long-gestating biopic of the legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury has found itself a new screenwriter, with The Tracking Board reporting that Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything) has signed on to revive the project and take over scripting duties from Peter Morgan (The Queen).

Sacha Baron Cohan had long been attached to the role of Mercury, before bowing out earlier this year due to creative differences with the surviving members of Queen. Johnny Flynn and Gemma Arterton are also set to appear as Roger Taylor and Mary Austin.

Production on the Freddie Mercury biopic is slated to get underway in June 2016.
