The Week in Spandex – Jessica Jones, Captain America: Civil War, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, X-Men: Apocalypse, Gambit, Wonder Woman, Justice League Dark, Justice League Mortal, The Flash, Arrow and more

November 21, 2015 by Gary Collinson

In this edition of The Week in Spandex, we look at Jessica Jones, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Doctor Strange, Captain America: Civil War, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Ant-Man, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: First Class, Gambit, Wonder Woman, Justice League Mortal, Justice League Dark, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Gotham, Heroes Reborn and more…

We’ll start things off this week in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Marvel and Netflix releasing their latest offering Jessica Jones on the streaming service yesterday. Ahead of its arrival, Marvel dropped a launch promo [see here], the opening credits [see here] and four clips from the show [see here and here], while Flickering Myth’s Luke Owen has been working through the episodes – read his reviews of episode one ‘AKA Ladies Night’ here, episode two ‘AKA Crush Syndrome’ here, episode three ‘AKA It’s Called Whiskey’ here and episode four ‘AKA 99 Friends’ here, along with The Defenders TV Podcast review of the first episode here…

…Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg has been discussing the chances of a second season of the show, as well as revealing that Captain Marvel was set to feature in the series when it was initially in development at ABC: “Back when it was at ABC Network, I did use Carol Danvers. But between then and when it ended up on Netflix, you know, the MCU shifted, and it also shifted away from the universe in the [comic] book. So in the book, the powers are very out in the open and the themes of that are about ‘the other,’ and in the cinematic universe that’s not the mythology. So there was a lot that I had to move away from, just in terms of sheer plot, and Carol Danvers got her own movie…”

…In a couple of other pieces of news from Marvel’s Netflix properties, the Daredevil Twitter account released a new season two promo teasing an appearance from Luke Cage [watch it here], while Marvel CCO Joe Quesada has laughed off previous rumours suggesting that Iron Fist would be scrapped, stating that: “Iron Fist is being worked on, that’s all I can say. That’s all I can say. Where did you read these rumours? They were on the internet? So they must be true…”

…As filming continues on Doctor Strange, Luke Owen was lucky enough to get a glimpse of the D23 concept footage at a Disney presentation in London, and you can read his written report on what we learned from the footage here, and watch his video breakdown here. Meanwhile, Luke also got to see the Captain America: Civil War D23 trailer, and you can find his video breakdown on that here…

…Speaking of Civil War, Paul Bettany has been speaking about his return as The Vision, and how the character will factor in to the changing team dynamics in the Phase Three launching threequel: “It’s going to be a lot of fun. I think it’s really interesting, the way that a huge, epic superhero extravaganza is discussing a really interesting question, which is about people unilaterally going into other people’s countries and their intervention there. It’s actually an interesting thing to talk about in a massive forum like that. What I love about my character is that there are so many places for him to go. I think he’s very interested in what it means to be human and what love is. The only way one can guarantee one’s loyalty is love. Loyalty is beyond logic, really. Logic doesn’t really provide for loyalty. If your logic changes suddenly and things not make sense, you can alter your allegiance, but love stops you from being able to do that.” Bettany also commented on how he found the process of working with Civil War helmers Anthony and Joe Russo, compared to Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon, and you can find the rest of his comments here…

…In more Phase Three news, Karen Gillan shared her excitement about her impending return as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, as well as singing the praises of director James Gunn: ““I have received a copy of the script. I took it in my hands, because they don’t send it over by email; they deliver it by hand and it was so cool. I was so excited, and I ran upstairs, and I put on the soundtrack, the Awesome Mixtape 2, and then got into it. It’s so good. I think what I’m really excited about it delving into the sisterly relationship between Gamora and Nebula. I think that we’re going to see a little bit more of that, and it’s going to be a bit more fleshed out. James Gunn is the most enthusiastic. He’s on this natural high the whole time. And it just makes us so excited about it. He just knows the world inside out. He’s so passionate about it. The whole thing has come from him. It’s totally his vision. It hasn’t been compromised at all. It’s completely down to him. So that’s the most exciting thing…”

…To promote the upcoming Blu-ray release of Ant-Man, Marvel has officially released two scenes from the movie in the Ant-Man and Falcon fight and mid-credits scene with Hank Pym presenting Hope Van Dyne with the Wasp suit [watch them here], along with a trio of deleted scenes and a sneak peek at the gag reel [see here and here]. Meanwhile, illustrator Andy Park has also given us a look at another early alternate design for the Ant-Man suit, with a piece of concept art that you can check out here…

…Over at ABC and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is set to take a week off for Thanksgiving, but you can take a look at a promo for the next episode ‘Closure’ here, and be sure to check out Danny Hale’s review of this week’s ‘Many Heads, One Tale’ here, along with a featurette exploring the VFX work of Andrew’s transformation into Lash here…

…ABC has also given us our first look at footage from the second season of Agent Carter with the release of a teaser trailer which you can see here, along with a new promotional image of Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter here. The show is set to return on Tuesday, January 5th with a special two-hour opener…

…Rocket Raccoon is reunited with his family in this Saturday’s ninth episode of the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series, and you can take a look at a clip from the episode ‘We Are Family’ here…

…Click below to continue on for Deadpool, X-Men: Apocalypse, X-Men: First Class, Gambit, Wonder Woman, Justice League Mortal, Justice League Dark, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Gotham, Heroes Reborn and more…
