LEGO Marvel Super Heroes – Spider-Man: Ghost Rider Team-Up (76058) Review

June 13, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Gary Collinson reviews LEGO Marvel Super Heroes – Spider-Man: Ghost Rider Team-Up…

Having been absent from this year’s Captain America: Civil War range, the friendly neighbourhood wall-crawler is back with a bang this summer as LEGO releases three Spider-Man themed sets, including one which is likely to have fans salivating – Spider-Man: Ghost Rider Team-Up (76058). Yes, the Ghost Rider makes his hotly-anticipated debut in the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes line, complete with flaming Hell Cycle, and I’ll say right away that this set is off the chain. But enough with the puns. Let’s take a look at what you get…

For the majority of fans, Ghost Rider is sure to be the main selling point of this set, but he isn’t the only attraction as we also get our very first Hobgoblin minifigure (along with his glider and a flaming pumpkin bomb), a section of sidewalk, and of course the web-slinger himself. It’s the same Spider-Man figure we’ve seen numerous times, but the set does include his new webbing accessory, which looks really good, and the sidewalk has a couple of nice features in the Manhattan street signs and newspaper boxes – and newspapers! – for the Daily Bugle and the Front Line. Including the three minifigures and a few other bits and bobs, we’re looking at 217 pieces in total, and it retails for £19.99 / $19.99.

While the Spider-Man minifigure itself offers nothing new, it’s a great rendition of the character if Peter Parker isn’t already part of your collection. But even if he is, you won’t mind the duplicate in order to get your hands on the rather splendid Hobgoblin and Ghost Rider. Both of these minifigs are exceptional; there’s some nice printing on their torsos (both front and back) and excellent use of colour, particularly on Hobgoblin. But the gold star is reserved for Ghost Rider’s head: it looks fantastic, although I’m sure there’ll be a few people disappointed that the trans orange hair piece isn’t removable. There’s no printing on his legs either, but for me, that’s a minor quibble.

Along with the minifigures we get three builds in this set; I’ve already mentioned the sidewalk, which I really like, while Hobgoblin’s glider is decent enough. The main build though is of course the Hell Cycle, and the designer has done a first rate job here. It’s a little on the large size, but there’s a great amount of detail, and most importantly, it looks absolutely superb, especially with Ghost Rider in the saddle, chain flowing behind him.

If you haven’t been able to tell already, I’m a big, big fan of Spider-Man: Ghost Rider Team-Up. I had high expectations for the set, and LEGO has delivered in spades. For the price I really can’t fault it; it is easily my favourite Super Heroes set of the year, and possibly my favourite set across the entire range at this price point. If you’re a fan of the Super Heroes line, this set it a must have.
