Marvel announces new Star Wars: Darth Maul comic series

November 14, 2016 by Gary Collinson

USA Today has revealed that Marvel is set to launch a brand new Star Wars comic miniseries based upon the fan-favourite Sith Lord Darth Maul, which will take place prior to the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

The new five-issue series from writer Cullen Bunn and artist Luke Ross will find Maul “an untested warrior under the training of Darth Sidious, who would later become the Galactic Emperor. Told to stand down from engaging with Jedi yet, Maul hunts down the worst of the worst in the cosmic underworld to vent his frustration. After learning a young Jedi Padawan named Eldra Kaitis has fallen into the hands of a crime lord, Maul seizes an opportunity to test his skills against a real Jedi but also maybe turn someone else to the dark side.”

“Darth Maul was, as you might imagine, my favorite character in The Phantom Menace,” says Cullen Bunn. “I loved that we were seeing a new kind of Sith. Though he was only in the movie for a few short scenes, he left his mark. I couldn’t help but wonder what had driven his brash, impatient anger. That’s part of what we’re exploring with this book.”

Bred on hate, fear, and anger. Steeped in the ways of darkness…trained to kill. Darth Maul’s time as an apprentice to Darth Sidious has long been cloaked in shadows, but at last we will reveal his tale of revenge. His master tells him to embrace his anger, but to stay hidden and bide his time. Maul has waited long enough – his patience growing ever thinner. His moment to step into the light has finally come. Prepare for a tale of unbridled rage as Darth Maul readies one of his first encounters with his mortal enemy…with the Jedi.

Star Wars: Darth Maul #1 is set to arrive in February.
