2017 Summer Movie Preview

April 22, 2017 by Liam Hoofe

Despicable Me 3

UK Release Date: June 25th

What is it: The third installment of the Despicable Me series, starring Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, new addition Trey Parker and of course, The Minions.

Why it might be good: The Despicable Me franchise has proved golden at the box office, and the movies, while never reaching the heights of their Disney counterparts, are fairly consistent.

The added addition of Trey Parker to the cast may also provide some fresh laughs for audiences and the movie is likely to feature some imaginative animated sequences, if nothing else.

Why it might be bad: The law of diminishing returns suggests that this movie may deliver what the first two installments did, and the mixed reaction to the Minions movie suggest that audiences may be getting a little tired of the little yellow critters. The second film certainly put more emphasis on the little guys, and this movie could end up being Minions 2, as opposed to Despicable Me 3.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

UK Release Date: July 7th

What is it: The first movie based on the MCU’s version of Spider-Man. With Tom Holland donning the suit for the second time, and Michael Keaton appearing as lead antagonist, The Vulture.

Why it might be good: Marvel are among the most consistent studios in Hollywood, and it’s difficult to see this movie being anything other than a success.

Tom Holland’s take on Spider-Man in Civil War showed great promise, and the John Hughes-inspired high school setting will likely please mainstream audiences and Spidey purists alike.

The addition of Michael Keaton to the cast is a big deal for Marvel as well as they try to create the MCU’s first really memorable villain.

Why it might be bad: From what we have seen from the movie so far, Tony Stark looks set to be heavily involved in the plot, and while Robert Downey Jr.’s presence in a movie is never a bad thing, this could end up feeling like another installment in the Iron Man franchise, as opposed to its own movie.

The trailers have also given away several key plot points, so let’s hope Marvel still have a few surprises up their sleeves with this one.
